Ghanaian athletes need to sacrifice more to excel – Gaisah

Former Ghana long jumper, Ignatius Gaisah believes athletics in the country will get to its highest peak if athletes are ready to sacrifice more for the sport.

Gaisah, who is Ghana’s first and only World Athletes Championship silver medalist, paid a surprise visit at the second Open Circuit Championship which came off at the El Wak Sports Stadium during the weekend.

According to him, local athletes have huge potentials but need to put in more work.

“The talents are there but it also depends on the individual. When I was competing with Margret Simpson and the others, we had love and passion for the sports.

“The upcoming ones need to put in much efforts to be able to excel in the sports and the nation must also support them,” Gaisah told Starr FM Sports.

The second Open Circuit Championship saw over 100 athletes from the 10 regions battling to book a place at the 2017 World Championship and Youth Championship in Bahamas and Kenya but no athlete made the required mark.

The GAA will organize three more circuits to give chance for the athletes to qualify for this year’s international competitions.

Gaisah currently competes for Netherlands after a nationality switch in 2013.
