Ghanaian basketball players are set to host a match on Sunday at the University of Ghana main court to raise funds for Gerald Sappor who was diagnosed with Leukemia recently.

The promising player who helped University of Ghana win multiple trophies in the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship as well as other tournaments will have to go under the knife if he’s to return to the hard courts again.

News about the player contracting Leukemia went viral on Thursday on Social Media when basketball lovers use the hashtag #ISTANDWITHGERALD.

All efforts to raise funds for the player has proved futile as most governmental authorities have failed to show support to the national asset.

But in a bid to get rapid funds to aid for the Nungua Coldstore forward, the basketball players have agreed to converge at the University of Ghana basketball courts on Sunday at 3:00 pm to engage in a fund raiser match.

The game is expected to attract fans and benevolent people who are willing to donate their widow’s might to help the player have a successful surgery to get rid of the disease in time.

Notable people expected to grace the occasion include aspiring Member of Parliament, John Dumelo, CEO of Rite Multimedia and an advocate for basketball, Yaw Sakyi-Afari among others.

Gerald Sappor graduated from the University of Ghana (UG) in 2019 after helping the University win multiple titles.

Leukemia is a group of blood cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal blood cells. Though the exact cause of leukemia is not known, it is thought to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
