Ghanaian clubs set for a showdown with Exco over 'unfettered powers' to decide season

Football clubs in Ghana are set for a massive showdown with the Ghana Football Association's Executive Council over a potential "unilateral decision" on the future of the season amid the Coronavirus shutdown.

The Executive Council is clothed with powers to decide on all matters that hinge on "unforeseen contingencies and force majeure".

Article 78 of the 2019 GFA Statutes amended at Congress on December 19 stipulate that "The Executive Council shall have the power to decide on all cases of force majeure and on all matters not provided for in these Statutes, such decisions to be made according to right and justice, taking into account the relevant regulations of FIFA and CAF."

But it is this provision in the statutes adopted by Congress which has sparked a wave of disquiet among football clubs in the West African nation.

A growing number of football club chiefs have told GHANAsoccernet that they will challenge the power of the Exco in deciding the future of the season.

Former Ghana FA vice-president George Afriyie has given the clearest hint of the position of club owners.

They insist that the power to decide the future of any campaign must be a preserve of Congress - the highest decision-making body of the FA and must be guarded.

The clubs have initiated moves to call for an Extraordinary Congress to make serious amendments to the current statutes which appear to give the EXCO unfettered powers.

It's been a massive bottled up emotions among senior members of many top clubs in the country as they await the decision of the Executive Council.
