Ghanaian cricketers to forgo X'mas

Accra, Dec 22, GNA - Dethroned West Africa Cricket champions Ghana are bracing themselves up to reclaim the title they lost to Sierra Leone early this year, by forgoing this year's Christmas celebrations to prepare for the quadrangular competition in March, next year.

To begin with, the national team cricketers will engage each other in a group of two in the yearly one-day Chairman's competition at the Achimota School's Oval on Boxing day.

The day's competition is to fine-tune the players ahead of the league, which kick-starts in January aimed at toughening the players for the Four-Nation West Africa Championship.

Defending champions and host Sierra Leone, Nigeria, The Gambia and Ghana will battle in the two-week championship to determine the King of Cricket in the Sub-region.

Mr David Quagrine, Chairman of the Ghana Cricket Association told the GNA in Accra that it was important that the team prepared very early to forestall any eventuality.

He said there was no automatic choice of players since there were new ones emerging on the scene, stating that everyone would have to justify his inclusion in the crack squad.
