Ghanaian football legend Awuley Quaye to get state assisted funeral

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will honor the funeral ceremony of the late Black Stars legend Awuley Quaye, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2024.

At a press conference held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, the family of the late captain confirmed the President's attendance at the state-assisted ceremony, set to take place at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

Additionally, a memorial match in honor of the late Awuley Quaye was announced at the same press conference.

The match, to be held at McDan La Town Park, will feature former legends from Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics who will come together to pay tribute to their late colleague.

The press conference was attended by the children of the late Awuley Quaye, family members, officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ghana Football Association, as well as legends from Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics, including some of the deceased's former teammates.

Dan Kwaku Yeboah, the spokesperson for the family, expressed profound gratitude to the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and TT Brothers for their support after the passing of the late legend.

Awuley Quaye Sr., renowned for captaining the Black Stars to Ghana's third AFCON title in 1978, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024.

A celebrated figure of Great Olympics, he leaves behind his sons, Abdullah Quaye, who played for the Qatar national team, and Lawrence Quaye, known as Junior, as well as two daughters.
