A Ghanaian contingent of 20 golfers will arrive in Nigeria on Friday for an international match-play against the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja. The visit is part of scheduled activities to mark Nigeria’s 55th Independence Day.

The golfers from Achimota Club 1924 will contest against the host club in Abuja over two days, with double and single matches being lined up on October 3 and October 4 respectively.

The Chairman Organising Committee Independence Day Tournament, Chief Okey Igweh, said yesterday that the coming of the Ghanaians will deepen regional relations between both countries.

IBB Club and Achimota have traditionally interchanged visits and delegated large contingent of business golfers whenever either of the nations is celebrating its Independence Day.

It is a special moment in the bond as there was no exchange of visits last year due to the closing of Achimota golf course for renovation.

Achimota last visited Abuja in 2013 while IBB Club went to Accra in March for Ghana’s 58th Independence Day celebration.

The international matchplay is one of the activities which IBB Club is organizing to mark Nigeria’s national week.

The Independence Cup for club players and invited guests will hold on October 1. The tournament will feature 250 players in five different flight categories.

Igweh promised the golfers of a memorable tournament, assuring that the golf course has been kept in good condition to make play interesting.

“We are playing wet season rule where the players are allowed to prefer their balls. On the whole we want to assure golfers, guests and sponsors that this is a tournament that no effort has been spared to arrange. The gift items and prizes are of highest quality while there will also be a gala night for all to enjoy,” Igweh said.

Meanwhile, IBB Club recently visited Uganda and Rwanda for friendly matches. The contingent led by the Captain Hamid Abbo, spent four days Kampala and Entebbe while in Uganda, and capped it with a visit to Kigali in Rwanda.
