Mawuko wins La Route de Koforidua

Koforidua, Oct. 14, GNA- Richard Mawuko of Koforidua River Park Cycling Club won the five-kilometre La Route de Koforidua cycling competition organised at Koforidua on Saturday by the Ghana Cycling Association (GCA) and sponsored by the French Embassy. He won the race with an individual time of 7 min, 38.08 sec. while Francis Tetteh of City Migro Club of Accra came second with a time of 7 min, 38.91 seconds and Newton Coffie of Accra Nippon Club came third with a time of 7 min, 45.87 sec.

On team basis, City Migro was first with an average time of 7 min, 26.03 sec, Gutton Club came second with 7 min, 33.76 sec. and Nippon Club came third with 7 min, 43.07 sec. In the 60-kilometre Criteria race, Philip Randolf of City Migro Club came first with a time of one hour, 46 min. 55 sec., Francis Tetteh also of Migro Club was second with a time of one hour, 46 min, 54.94 sec, while Joseph Annang of Gutton Club was third with a time of one hour, 46 min, 56.17 sec. In all, 64 cyclists from all over the country took part in the competition.

As part of the day's activities, a seven-member Eastern Regional Cycling Association was inaugurated under the chairmanship of Dr. Adolph Appiah of the Koforidua Central Hospital. Other members of the Association include, Mr Charles Adu Asante of Chairs Ridders Club, Adukrom, Vice-Chairman, Mr Amadu Tajidee Musah, Secretary, Mr S. A. Tetteh of National Sports Council, Treasurer, with Mr Enoch Gyampoh of River Park, Koforidua and Mr Andrews Aboah of Medii Minor Club, Adukrom as members.

The New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive, Nana Adjei Boateng, called for sponsorship for sporting disciplines. He appealed to the newly-formed Eastern Regional Branch of the GCA to ensure the development and promotion of the sport in the region saying the New Juaben Municipal Assembly will give every support to the association.

Nana Adjei Boateng expressed his appreciation to the French Embassy and other sponsors of the competition.

The Deputy Cultural Attache to the French Embassy, Mr. Mathew Kossi, called for the development of cycling structures in the country to enable Ghana to produce good competitors for international competitions.
