Swedish immigration authorities have refused a soccer team from Ghana entry visas due to fears that players would seek asylum while in Sweden.

The team was suppose to take part in the Gothia Cup, a large youth tournament held annually in Sweden.

Some 1,525 teams from 60 countries are competing in this year's Gothia Cup, which opened on Monday and concludes on July 17.

About 45,000 spectators were expected to attend the opening ceremony at Gothenburg's Ullevi stadium, where Eriksson was to address the crowd.

The Nigerian squad and officials of a Palestinian side were also refused visas
