The results of our latest poll are in and we can reveal that the majority of Goal Ghana readers do not believe that Black Stars forward Andre Ayew and Olympique de Marseille can win the Ligue 1 title.
OM have been much improved under Marcelo Bielsa this season and their superb form had led to many believing that the domestic giants could end their five-year wait for the French crown.
However, over the last few weeks their form has slipped.
The Olympians were handed a shock home defeat by Stade Malherbe Caen at the end of February, and were denied a home victory against fellow contenders Olympique Lyonnais in the middle of March when the referee didn’t spot that Lucas Ocampos’s shot had crossed the line.
OM could have turned things around when they welcomed Paris Saint-Germain to the Stade Velodrome at the beginning of April. However, despite leading 2-1 at half time, the Phoceens capitulated after the break and lost 3-2 after Marquinhos scored and Jeremy Morel scored an own goal.
Without Ayew—who was suspended after arguing with the referee following the PSG defeat—Marseille then fell 1-0 away at Girondins de Bordeaux.
Bielsa has often been criticised for the way that his side fade over the course of a campaign, and once again his outfit are struggling to maintain their momentum to the season’s end.
Marseille now sit down in fourth. Not only have they fallen seven points behind leaders Lyon and five behind PSG (who have a game in hand), but they have also dropped out of the Champions League places, having been overtaken by AS Monaco.
OM sit one point behind the Club of the Principality and are facing a tricky away trip to FC Nantes on Friday evening.
Regardless of the outcome of that match, Goal Ghana readers appear to have largely given up hope that Ayew can lift the domestic championship this season.
61.5 percent of you have voted that in light of OM’s defeat to Bordeaux, Ayew and Marseille can no longer win the Ligue 1 title. Only 38.5 percent of people believe that the Black Star can still guide his beloved side to the title.
This may be Ayew’s last opportunity to claim the French title; the international is out of contract this summer and his departure is looking inevitable.
