The talk about Andre Ayew's potential ascendancy to the captaincy of the Black Stars refuses to go away. Rahim Ayew is calling on bigwigs to give the Marseille player the armband.
Rahim, one of the sons of the legendary Abedi Pele, believes his younger brother has all the attributes to lead the Black Stars to the laurels that have eluded them for so long.
"You can see from the under 20 [World Youth Championship] and he won it. So why don't you give him the captain's armband?," Rahim told the Finder Sports paper on Tuesday.
"If you look at the three boys [sons of Abedi], Andre has the character of my dad a lot. Being leader on the field of play entails so many things and not everyone can be a leader," the player said.
The former Eleven Wise midfielder also argued that he is not speaking based on nepotism, but because the Marseille player deserves it.
"This guy wants to win trophies and maybe as captain of the Black Stars he would win us the Fifa World Cup. They say an African country win the World Cup but I think Andre can lead the Black Stars to do that. Not because he is my brother but because I have seen those leadership qualities in him."
Andre, seen by many as a Black Stars captain in waiting, but with the unwritten hierarchy with respect to the captaincy, he appears to be a long way from it with elderly players like Sulley Muntari, Derek Boateng and Anthony Annan all ahead of him in the absence of current captain John Mensah and deputy John Paintsil.
Andre was captain when the Black Satellites conquered the world at the World Youth Championships in Egypt in 2009. At age 22, Andre Ayew has played in three African Nations Cup tournaments (2008, 2010, and 2012) and the Fifa World Cup in South Africa 2010.
