Global peace games on Sept. 19

Accra, Sept. 19, GNA - This year's Global Peace Games, which features deprived children in promoting the United Nation's decade of peace and nonviolence has been scheduled for the Esi Sutherland Children Park in Accra on Friday, September 19.

Five hundred children from the SOS villages, Play Soccer, Right to Play and Community Sports Programme, all non-governmental organizations, are expected to compete in soccer, educational presentation, music, art and dance.

Mr Edwin Andoh, Programmes Director of Play Soccer, one of the four collaborators, announced at a press conference in Accra on Monday that the games which begun two years ago, is to build a culture of friendship, cultural understanding, peace and nonviolence among children and youth around the globe.

The Worldwide programme under the auspices of the United Nations with support from FIFA begun in Ghana with only two local collaborators -Play Soccer and SOS Village in Tema, but it has been expanded to embrace "Right to Play and Community Sports Development Programme", epitomizing its global character.

Mr Anddoh said Fayenoord soccer academy in Gomao Feteh and the school for Street Children in Accra were expected to join but they pulled out because it coincided with an already planned scheduled. The games are not commercial neither is it sponsored by the UN but rather by coalition of non-governmental organizations in every country.

A special message from Mr Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, will be delivered and the Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama is expected to grace the occasion.
