Takoradi, Nov. 24, -GNA Madam Sophia Horner-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister has advised the Police personnel not to allow emotions to take the better part of them in the performance of their lawful duty.

She said, as professionals, they must work in the best interest of the public to win their support instead of condemnation. Madam Horner-Sam said these at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a 150 million cedis female cells at the Central Police Station at Takoradi on Wednesday.

The Western Regional branch of the Police Ladies Association (POLAS) is financing the project, which is expected to accommodate 10 women. Madam Horner-Sam commended members of POLAS for their initiative, and said it would be "too dangerous" to keep both males and females suspects in the same cells.

The Deputy Regional Minister said the determination and valour of the Police has minimised the activities of armed robbers in the country and this, had ensured a peaceful environment.

Mr. George Essiama, Western Regional Police Commander said the project was a clear indication that Police ladies were fulfilling one of their objectives to seek the welfare of women and children. He assured the public that the Police Service, as a matter of principle, does not permit female suspects or detainees to share the same cells with men.

"In cases where Police Stations have no female cells, female suspects are escorted to the nearest station where there are cells for women.

Mrs Jessie Borquaye, President of POLAS said the association hopes to construct female cells for all Police Stations in the region. She therefore appealed to non-governmental organisations, philanthropists and the general public to assist POLAS in its programmes.

Madam Caroline Awuku, Managing Director of Intex Company, who chaired the function, advised members of the Police Service to be law abiding and avoid acts that could damage the image of the Service. She pledged to assist with the necessary boards and scantlings for the constructions of the cells.
