Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams has revealed that Ghana’s $9 million prize for appearing at the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be deposited into the newly established Sports Fund.

Qualifying for the tournament has guaranteed at least $10.5 million, including $9 million in prize money for group-stage participation and an additional $1.5 million to cover preparation expenses.

Further prize money is awarded as teams progress through the competition.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Adams said the anticipated World Cup revenue was a key factor behind creating the Sports Fund.

“One of the sources is proceeds from competitions and tournaments. For example, what FIFA is going to give us as a country is $9 million. The $1.5 million is for preparation, so that will go into preparation. But the $9 million would go into the fund,” he explained.

“Once it goes into the fund, there will be structured utilisation. So we can, for the first time, have infrastructure or edifices that we can point to, that out of the World Cup, this is what we are able to do."

He added that the government aims to ensure Ghana’s participation in the 2026 tournament leaves a lasting legacy.

“We intend to have projects that we can show that in our participation in the US, Canada and Mexico World Cup 2026, this is what we are able to do.”
