Accra, Oct. 20, GNA - The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) will on Saturday, October 21, stage a champion of champions tournament at Kalamazoo Hotel, Osu.
Mr Gideon Quartey, Vice Chairman of the Association said the tournament would involve boxers who won their fights in the first and second quarter open championships organized by GAABA earlier in the year.
He said as usual, trophies and souvenirs would be at stake and urged participating gyms to ensure that their boxers turned out early for their fights.
Mr Quartey said the tournament was designed to select a formidable amateur team for the region in readiness for impending competitions and to provide the national team selectors to an opportunity to pick good boxers for the Bombers.
The vice chairman said the era where boxers were hand picked for national duties without any rigorous selection process should be a thing of the past, adding that boxers could only distinguish themselves if they gained entry to the national team on merit. He appealed to boxing lovers in and around the capital to troop to Kalamazoo Hotel to witness an evening of classic amateur boxing.
