Asamoah Gyan scored a brace against Al Wehdah but it was not enough to secure Al Ain a place in the semi final of the Etisalat Cup tie on Friday night.
The Ghanaian and teammate Mohamed Al Saedi scored two goals apiece on the night to secure an impressive 4-1 win for Al Ain.
However, Al Ain's progress was dependent on Al Wasl getting beaten by Al Jazira to qualify for the semifinal from group A.
The brace by Gyan extended his tally to 14 goals in 14 games.
