Hearts apologise to Nyantakyi after attack

Accra Hearts of Oak have apologised to the president of Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, for the physical and verbal assault he suffered during the Phobians’ Caf Confederation Cup home loss to AC Djoliba at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Some fans of the club charged at the GFA boss, accusing him of not inviting Hearts of Oak players to the Black Stars and also of turning down the club’s appeal to postpone midweek match against AshantiGold to enable the team prepare for the match against Djoliba.

Police are currently hunting the supporters who confronted the official, according to reports.

However, Hearts have condemned the conduct of those fans and swiftly tendered an apology to Nyantakyi on behalf of the entire outfit.

“On behalf of Hearts of Oak management, I must apologise to Mr Nyantakyi for the shameful conduct of our supporters,” Hearts' corporate affairs officer, Joe Addo told Goal.

“Their acts cannot be justified in any sense as the GFA have been an arm of immense support for our African campaign.

“The GFA donated $30,000 towards our campaign and are offering support in many other ways.

“I know we have some passionate supporters but I just don’t get it why they’d blame Mr Nyantakyi for our defeat.

“If they have grievances, there are appropriate channels to route them but not in this shameful and regrettable way,” he said.

Hearts progressed to the next stage of the Caf Confederation Cup despite a 1-0 defeat to Djoliba, thanks to the Ghanaians’ 2-1 win in the first leg.
