Help develop lesser sports - Jumah

Kumasi, July 4, GNA - The Member of Parliament for Asokwa in the Kumasi Metropolis, Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah has called on firms, corporate bodies and private individuals to assist the government develop the lesser known sports in the country.

He said even though there were lots of talents in most of the sports disciplines across the country, not much effort had been done to tap the potentials and make use of their talents to bring honours to the country.

Mr Jumah who was the former Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive was speaking at the inauguration of the Ashanti Regional branch of the National Supporters Union in Kumasi at the weekend during which a 19-member executive body was sworn into office to serve a three-year term.

Mr Jumah who is also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, therefore called for the intensification of efforts to unearth talents in cycling, swimming and other traditional recreational sports.

Mr Abraham Boakye, (one-man supporter) the National President of the Union said the national executive had targeted to mobilise about two million supporters throughout the country by September this year. He said the executive body would soon advertise in the national newspapers and on radio for interested supporters to join the Union. Mr Frank Adjei Darko, assemblyman for Asokwa, who is the Chairman for the Ashanti Regional branch of the Union, on behalf of the members pledged to sustain the activities of the Union.

He therefore called on the members to show commitment and dedication towards the aims of the Union so as to ensure that Ghana competes favourably in world sports. 04 July 05
