Iranian football is facing growing uncertainty surrounding one of its biggest names, Sardar Azmoun, after reports emerged that the striker could miss the upcoming World Cup due to alleged disciplinary action linked to political and social expression.

According to Iranian media outlet Fars News Agency, Azmoun has reportedly been sanctioned for what authorities described as a “violation of national values,” raising serious doubts about his place in the national team.

The controversy is believed to stem from several public actions in recent years. Azmoun has been openly associated with support for the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which emerged in Iran during widespread protests.

His stance on social issues has drawn both praise and criticism, placing him at the centre of a sensitive national debate.

Another flashpoint came after a widely circulated image showed Azmoun shaking hands with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, a moment that reportedly added to scrutiny around his public profile and perceived political alignment.

Despite the controversy, Azmoun remains one of Iran’s most important players. He has scored 57 goals for the national team, making him the second-highest scorer in Iran’s history, behind legendary striker Ali Daei.

His potential absence would be a major sporting blow for the Iranian national team, known as the “Cheetahs,” especially given his experience on the international stage and his consistent goal threat in major tournaments.
