‘Trustful’ Trustees of SSNIT beat arch rivals Exchequers of the Bank of Ghana 2-1 in their foul-strewn and tension packed Mobitel sponsored knockout finals staged at the National Hockey Pitch last Saturday. If the game was famous for anything, it definitely wasn’t the finesse of ball play displayed by both teams but the high tension and the copious number of incidents that characterised the game. Hockey fans who thronged the Pitch came with so much expectations for a great game but had to leave relatively disappointed because the game did not produce the anticipated thrill. On the other hand, the fans relished the third clash of the two giants in as many weeks for the epic Champion of Champion decider. In his remarks, the special Guest of Honour, the Honourable Deputy Minister for Yout! h and Sports Mr Joe Aggrey, acknowledged the tension that comes with matches of this nature but was emphatic on the point that unsportsman-like behaviour had no place in Ghana sports. He therefore encouraged the Executive of the Greater Accra Hockey Association to stamp-ut such behaviour from the hockey scene.
In the ladies’ encounter, Reformers of Prison Service made sure they put their Christmas and New Year celebrations to an early start by comfortably strolling home to a 2-1 win over Extinguishers of the Fire Service. The league’s top scorer Felicia Mefeitu scored both goals for Reformers while Ramatu scored for Extinguishers. By this victory, Reformers clinch both the league and knockout double and thus nullify the planned Champion of Champions match in the ladies’ category.
In the Juvenile category, Pepsi League Champions Multi Babies had to fight to draw level and were eventually dragged into a penalty-stroke competition to decide who takes the Mobitel knockout crown in their match against GAHA Babies. In the end, GAHA Babies prevailed to beat Multi Babies by 5-4 goal margin to set-up a champion of champions clash that would precede the Exchequers Trustees clash scheduled for December 29.
