Former Hearts of Oak, Ashgold, and Kumasi Asante Kotoko coach, David Duncan claims he likes to be well remunerated at any club he works, primarily because he doesn’t want to resort to taking bribes from players and doing shady deals with player agents to augment a meager salary.
He claims that he has never taken a bribe nor accepted a gift from a player or player agent in his over 20 years of practice as a coach.
The fire-brand coach adds that he doesn’t entertain gifts and bribes because “it has the tendency to compromise me.”
Duncan who is noted for his outspoken nature in an interview with Accra based Asempa FM revealed that he has always been the highest paid coach in the local league and does not shy away from that.
“I have always been the highest paid coach in Ghana. At Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, and at Ashgold. The salary I received at Ashgold was out of the world. The only exception is at Accra Great Olympics and even that it was because I was cutting my teeth in the coaching profession and had just been elevated from an assistant coach to head coach but aside that as far as I know I have always been the highest paid coach in the local league. I want to be paid well so that I don’t have to do deals and get a cut from player sales or signings. I don’t even take gifts because it compromises you as a professional coach. I dare anyone who has ever bribed me to come out and say it. Never in my life have I taken a bribe,” he stated emphatically.
Duncan who is presently unattached also claimed that he is not out of a job now because of how expensive he is.
“It is not like I don’t have offers, I get many of them,” he added.
“But I always sieve them to find one that suits me and not because I overprice myself or merely because I need to earn a living or be paid.”
