Interim Hearts of Oak coach Henry Wellington says the delay in the start of the 2017/18 Ghana Premier League has helped them in building a formidable side for the season.
The Phobians are rebuilding their squad ahead of the coming season following the departure of key players such as Vincent Atinga, Kwame Kizito, Robin Gnagne and their last season's top scorer Thomas Abbey.
And speaking to reporters in the aftermath of their 1-0 win over second-tier side Swedru All Blacks in a pre-season friendly encounter on Sunday, Wellington, who has taken over the reins following suspension to head coach Frank Nuttal over insubordinate claims, has disclosed how the postponement of the league has helped in their preparations ahead of the upcoming campaign.
"Personally, I'm very happy with the league delay because it has given me ample time to assess my players in training. I think if it had been in full flow I wouldn’t have the time to assess or correct some of the petty mistakes we are making in friendly games."
"It has also helped me in spotting new talents which I don't think it would have been possible if the season had started. So for now that's why we are trying to build a solid team for the season."
The 2017/18 Ghana League season was scheduled to commence on February 9, but it’s been postponed indefinitely after Great Olympics served the Ghana Football Association with an injunction letter in a protest that Bechem United fielded an unqualified player against them during last season's campaign.
