Former Ghana and Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien says he is considering bowing out from active football.

The 35-year-old is at the twilight of a career that has seen him play in Ghana, France, England, Spain, Italy, Greece and Indonesia.

On the books of Persib Bandung last season, the Ghanaian is currently a free agent, having been released by the club.

“I am still playing in Indonesia and I am thinking of retiring soon," Essien told Finder Sports.

"I am now concerned about what I am going to do next.

“I don’t have plans of going into coaching but I may do something related to football."

Essien has played for a host of top European clubs including Real Madrid, AC Milan, Lyon and Chelsea.

He played for Bastia in France after leaving Ghanaian outfit Liberty Professionals.

At Chelsea, he won the Premier League on two occasions (2005-2006 and 2009-10), four FA Cup titles, one League Cup, two Community Shields and the prestigious Uefa Champions League in 2012.

At international level, the Accra-born represented Ghana at the 2002, 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the 2006 and 2014 Fifa World Cup tournaments.
