Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has conceded in an interview with Finder sports that he sometimes misses playing for the senior national team.
‘Yes I miss the Black Stars. I had a lot of wonderful moments with my colleagues and sometimes I miss the way we use to chat, share jokes and eat together. But that is part of life and you have to give way to the young ones,” he said.
When asked if he would consider a return to the Black Stars he smiled and said, “In life you can never say never but at the moment it looks very unlikely even though a lot of people have been talking to me to return.”
Appiah, regarded by connoisseurs of the game as one of Ghana’s most successful national team captains, retired from international football after the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa.
He qualified and led the Black Stars to two successive FIFA World Cup tournaments- Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010. Appiah ensured that the Black Stars left a lasting impression on world football
when Ghana reached the second round of the World Cup in the first attempt in Germany 2006. The Stars were also a penalty kick away from becoming the first African country to reach the World Cup but for striker Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss against Uruguay in the quarter finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Appiah is tipped to coach the Black Stars in the future, and even though he has not openly declared his interest in coaching the senior national team someday, he is already studying to obtain his coaching certificates.
