Two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner, Rev. Osei Kofi, has revealed that he used to play with onions and tomatoes as a child whenever his mother refused to buy him a football.

Osei Kofi, one of Ghana’s legendary footballers, led the Black Stars to win two AFCON titles during his playing days. However, his journey to becoming a renowned footballer was far from conventional.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, Rev Osei Kofi stated that he resorted to using foodstuffs, especially onions and tomatoes to play football as an infant. This peculiar habit, he said, made his mother believe he would one day become a professional footballer.

“My mother told me she knew I would become a footballer,” Osei Kofi explained. “So, I asked her the reason, and she revealed to me that while I was crawling, I used onions and tomatoes—things they used to prepare soup. If they didn’t buy me a ball by the time they returned from the market, I’d wrap a pair of socks and use it as a ball,” he shared.

After an illustrious professional career, during which he won multiple accolades and appeared in tournaments including the Olympics, Osei Kofi had a life-changing encounter with Christ. Since then, he has dedicated his life to pastoral work.
