Former Black Stars midfielder Derek Boateng has opened up on the sacrifices made by his mother to ensure that he enjoyed a relatively successful football career.

According to the former Getafe midfielder, his mother was heavily invested in his career and made sacrifices to ensure that he succeeded.

Speaking in an interview with Kingdom FM, Derek Boateng disclosed that he rewarded his mother’s efforts with a house from the first salary he earned after moving from Liberty Professionals.

Derek Boateng said that he did not spend a dime of the money but rather told the late owner of Liberty Professionals, Alhaji Sly Tetteh, to use it to build a house for his mother.

“I made my mom proud. She is very proud of me and listens to the radio every time just to hear my name. Growing up was really difficult for her, so she is really happy and proud about how things have turned out.

“The first salary I got from my first European club was used to build a house for her. I gave the money to the late Sly Tetteh and Mr. Ansong to build a house for my mom. I didn’t touch anything. There were times when I came to Ghana and had to sleep at her place because my house wasn’t ready yet,” he said.

Derek Boateng, who started his career at Liberty Professionals, played for clubs in Spain, Greece, Israel, England, and other places.

For the Black Stars, Derek Boateng was capped 47 times and scored one goal. He was a member of Ghana’s squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
