Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has explained that he left his position at Borussia Dortmund to take on the role of Black Stars head coach because he felt prepared for the challenge.

Speaking with FIFA, he described the Black Stars role as a significant step in his coaching development.

He mentioned that the Black Stars' offer was a permanent role, unlike his previous stint with the national team, and that the offer came when he had a year remaining on his Dortmund contract.

“I played for Dortmund for six years and coached for five years, so it was very important to maintain that relationship and keep my promise. Ghana then approached me again to join them on a regular basis, which led to a different discussion since my contract was ending in 2025,” he shared.

The German-trained coach also expressed gratitude to Dortmund for allowing him to leave on mutual consent.

“I thought I was ready to take the next step, so when I learned that Ghana was interested again, I had to discuss it with Dortmund. I was very pleased that Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl allowed me to depart the club and understood my desire to further develop myself as a head coach.”

The Ghana Football Association officially announced Otto Addo's appointment as the head coach of the Black Stars in a statement on Friday, March 15, 2024.

The GFA stated that Otto Addo emerged as the top choice in the recruitment process and secured a three-year contract.
