Asante Kotoko icon and former Black Meteors skipper Yussif Alhassan Chibsah has paid glowing tribute to Ghana legend Opoku Afriyie.
Feared and revered in equal proportions, the highly prolific Opoku Afriyie terrorized defenders and left goalkeepers in awe during his hey days with Asante Kotoko and later Hearts of Oak.
One of the few players to have played for Ghana’s two most glamorous clubs, Opoku Afriyie passed on Sunday, March 29, 2020.
Since yesterday, tributes have poured in from various quarters for the 1978 AFCON hero and FIFA intermediary Yussif Chibsah have joined a tall list of people paying tribute to the player who was nicknamed ‘Beyie’ for his penchant to score outrageous goals and ‘Nii Opoku’ during his short stint with the Phobians.
“Opoku Afriyie, aka “BAYIE”, aka “NII OPOKU”. I will never forget your role in finalizing my transfer from King Faisal to Kotoko. You were the only person Alhaji Grunsah listened to.
“I can’t also forget how u guided me as the captain of the Black Meteors from qualifiers through All African Games in Abuja to Olympic Games in Athens. I can’t also forget your guidance at Black Stars after my promotion from the Under 23.
“The last time you and I spoke was about 3 months ago when I sent you Kotoko STRIKE replica jerseys. May your gentle soul RIP. We have indeed lost a great one. #legend” he tweeted.
