Police last Saturday caused a major upset in the IPMC Hockey league with a well executed 2-1 win over A-League title contenders Golden Sticks of Ghana Commercial Bank. The win was only the second of the IGP’s men in the very entertaining season. Lead marksman Mawu Ahiagbe struck twice in the 14th and 28th minutes to give Police a good cushion at the end of the first half. Under the guidance of national coach Emmanuel Ahadjie, Police proved handful for the more experienced Golden Sticks as they managed to hold the Bankers at bay to clinch the victory in the 70 minute encounter.
In the top-liner of the day, League leaders CEPS were held to a pulsating 1-1 draw by Exchequers. Exchequers proved versatile in all departments of the game, and were unlucky to have what seem as the winning goal disallowed by Umpire George Mensah.
In the other matches of the day, Trustees cut the point difference between them and leaders CEPS to 2 by beating Marine Sticks 2-0 and youngsters, Real Ambassadors gave Reformers a scare but crumbled in the last minute to draw 3-3. The matches ended the first round of fierce competition in all categories with the second round due to commence immediately on August 8 and 9.
