Independence boxing show in Koforidua

Koforidua, March 7, GNA - Ibrahim Hussien of Akwatia, a featherweight boxer, on Friday won the best Independence Anniversary amateur boxer award of the Kingsby Springwater Boxing tournament.

Dasebre Dr Oti Boateng, Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area presented Hussien with a special prize while Nana Adjei Boateng, New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive also presented Mohammed Faisal, Hussien's challenger with a cash prize of 60,000 cedis for his gallantry.

In a keenly contested bout on the five-card contests for the night, pundits were unable to predict the eventual winner until the final verdict ( 2-1 in favour of Hussien) was announced. The two young boxers exhibited rare pugilist prowess spiced with lots of stamina and determination but Hussien managed to scrape through. In another interesting bout, old Pius Pio twice visited the canvas in the first and second rounds but came back strongly with some accurate punches which dazes his less experienced opponent, Simon, to win the welterweight contest.

J. A Yakuba also defeated Zando Samson in a technical knockout when Samson failed to continue with the fight in the third round complaining of shoulder pains.

S. S. Rashid Kawaw, son of veteran boxer Sulley Shitu, defeated Kwadwo Amoah 3-0 in a bantamweight contest and Abdul Madjid won against Kwesi Tyson 3-0 in a featherweight fight.

Dasebre Dr Oti Boateng urged the youth in Ghana to engage in at least one sporting activity saying, that sports does not only produce a healthy nation but also serve as means to wealth creation. 07 March 2004.
