Takoradi, Aug. 14, GNA – The 2012 Inter-Bases sports competition of the three Garrisons of the Ghana Armed Forces opened in Takoradi on Monday.
Teams of the three participating Garrisons from Accra, Tamale and Takoradi would compete in sporting disciplines including basketball, table tennis, cross-country, volleyball and soccer during the week-long competition.
Air Commodore Maxwell Mantsebi-Tei Nagai, Base Commander of the Takoradi Air Force Station, in a speech at the opening ceremony, said the biennially event was to promote the spirit of oneness among the various Bases within the military.
He said it also to prepare the competitors to participate in the Ghana Armed Forces Games, the Armed Forces Sports Sestival and the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games.
Air Commodore Nagai said sports was crucial for the development of the security services because it is the basic form of ensuring that personnel were physically fit and keep themselves in shape to undertake their duties efficiently.
