Inter Schools Sports Festival opens in Ho

Ho, March 10, GNA - A total of 16 Senior Secondary Schools in the Ho District are vying for honours in this year's Central Zone Inter-Schools Sports Festival underway in Ho.

They are, Abutia, Avatime, Awudome, Agotime, Akome, Adaklu, Mawuko and Mawuli Secondary Schools.

The rest are, OLA, Dzolo, Kpedze, Saint Prosper's College, Tanyigbe, Taviefe, Sokode and Tsito Secondary Technical School.

Opening the weeklong sports fiesta, Mr Victor K. Mensah, Ho District Director of Education re-emphasized the importance of sports to the socio-economic development of any nation and exhorted the participants to aspire to bring excellence to themselves, families, their schools and the nation at large.

He urged the participants to abide by the rules and regulations of the games, plan and strategize to outwit their opponents, adding that, "besides, the game is also meant to entertain and is a rallying point for socialization".

Mr Mensah asked the students to translate into their social lives lessons of discipline, determination and dedication acquired in sports to become role models for other youth groups to emulate. He urged them to eschew alcoholism, drugs and rivalry while al erting officials to be fair in their judgement.

Miss Doris Afari, the Zonal Secretary told the Ghana News Agency that the disciplines to be contested for are; soccer, handball, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics and cross country race in both boys and girls categories.

She said the cream of budding talents to be selected would represent the Central zone in the inter-zonal tournament scheduled between March 21-28 in Kpando.

Meanwhile, Mawuli School recorded an impressive win in both the boys and girls basketball events beating Tsito SecTech 43 - 26 in the boys division and followed up to trash OLA 24 - 6.

Kpedze Secondary School beat Taviefe 4-3 on penalties in the opening football match. Both teams settled for a 1-1 draw after the stipulated 90 minutes of play.
