Inter-zonal school sports festival ends at Kintampo

Kintampo, (B/A) August 31, GNA 96 Zone B emerged the overall champions of the Brong Ahafo inter-zonal Basic Schools sports festival which ended at Kintampo.

The week-long sports festival was participated by six zones in the Region who competed in netball, handball, table tennis and soccer. The education districts that formed Zone B were Sunyani, Tano North and Tano South followed by Zone C made up of Berekum, Dormaa, Jaman North and Jaman South Districts while Asutifi, Asunafo North and Asunafo South Districts representing Zone A placed third.

The other contesting Zones were made up of Tain, Techiman and Wenchi Districts for Zone D while Kintampo North, Nkoranza and Kintampo South formed Zone E with Atebubu-Amantin, Pru and Sene Districts representing Zone F.

Mr. Mark Nyewieh, Kintampo South District Director of Education in an address to the participants commended the organisers for ensiuring a peaceful and successful competition.

He urged the organisers to conduct vigorous training for those selected to represent the Region towards the National Sports Festival, which is scheduled to take place in Tamale to be a better frame to achieve glory and laurels for the Borng Ahafo Region Mr. Michael Edwin Hinneh-Aframfo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Sports Coordinator said a contingent of 180 boys and girls would be camped in Sunyani to prepare for selection towards the National Festival. He appealed to parents whose wards have been selected for the competition to offer them the necessary encouragement and support to enable them participate fully in the tournament, adding that it is unfortunate that some parents often try to withdraw their wards from participating in such programmes.

The Sports Coordinator cautioned the selected sports boys and girls that any of them who misconducts himself or herself and put up immoral behaviour at the camp would be driven away. The Kintampo North District Director of Education, Madam Josephine Lemawu paid special tribute to her colleague district directors for providing the necessary support for the sports organisers towards the organisation of the festival.

The results of the various disciplines were Zone C placed first in the Boys and Girls cross-country event and in the athletics Girls and Boys events.

Zone B came first in netball, handball boys and girls and table tennis boys with Zone A placing first in volleyball boys, while zone E came first in table tennis girls.

The soccer boy's trophy was won by Zone C with Zone A adjudged as the well-behaved zone during the Sports Festival. The District Directors of Education from Nkoranza, Mr. Kwabena Agyemang-Badu, Mr. K. Osei-Asibey, Tano South, Mrs. Lilian A. Ayeko, Jaman South, Mr. Anthony Danso, Tano North, Mr. James Kusi, Jaman North and Mr. Divine T. Osei Berekum graced the occasion.
