The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports to expand their scope of investment to other sporting disciplines.

While making her statement in Parliament on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Adwoa Safo emphasized that football is not the only sporting discipline in the country; thus, the sports minister must ensure the lesser-known sports also benefit from the state's investment.

“Mr. Speaker, as a country, we seem to be focusing so much on soccer, but there are other sporting disciplines. You will agree with me that we are over-focusing on football,” she said.

She wanted the Sports Ministry to invest in other sports to give a chance to sportsmen who can gainfully benefit from academic scholarships.

“There are other sports that need investment, like table tennis, basketball, and running. Nowadays, young people are interested in American football. We should move away from the traditional sport and focus on the emerging sports,” the MP stated.

She added, “Nigeria is doing well when it comes to basketball; a lot of their students are getting scholarships to the USA and Canada to study.”
