It hurts when Asamoah Gyan is criticized for penalty miss against Uruguay - Anthony Annan

A former Ghana international, Anthony Annan has revealed that he always weeps when Asamoah Gyan is criticized for his penalty miss against Uruguay during 2010 World Cup.

Black Stars held the South American side to a 1:1 in regulation time. However, during extra time, Ghana had a glorious opportunity to play in the semifinals for the first time after Luis Suarez prevented Dominic Adiyah's header with his hands in the last minute of the game.

Gyan, who had been Ghana's ket player stepped up for the spot-kick but struck the post.

According to the FC Inter Turku ace midfielder, he weeps anytime Ghanaian criticize the former Sunderland striker for the penalty miss.

"It pains me when some Ghanaians criticize Asamoah Gyan for the penalty miss against Uruguay.

"It’s so sad because we all knew he was our first penalty taker but that’s football, you can’t score all the time”.

Annan also revealed that Stephen Appiah never demanded to play the penalty against the South American side.

According to him, Appiah only motivated Gyan to score.

“Appiah didn’t go to Gyan to take the ball from him, he went there to motivate him to score. Ghanaians should forget about it and move on,’’

Ghana subsequently lost 5:4 to Uruguay in penalty shootout to exit the tournament.
