Jordan Ayew and Aston Villa’s six-month wait for a league victory came to an end on Saturday as they smashed Rotherham 3-0 in the Championship.

The Villains were relegated last season after a miserable campaign when they took just 17 points from 38 Premier League matches, winning just three.

Indeed, heading into 2016-17 campaign, they hadn’t won a league game since beating Norwich City 2-0 in February, a run completing a run of 15 games without a win.

Any hopes of asserting themselves back in the second tier for the first time since 1988 last weekend were thwarted when they were defeated 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, but they made of for that disappointment with a convincing victory over Rotherham.

Benin forward Rudy Gestede was the star man, opening the scoring in the 21st minute before adding a second in first-half stoppage time.

The powerful frontman then turned provider late on to set up Villa wonderkid Jack Grealish to add a third and complete a one-sided showing.

Jordan featured on the right side of Villa’s 4-4-2 formation, with coach Roberto Di Matteo opting to use new signing Ross McCormack centrally in support of Gestede.

The Ghana international, who has been heavily linked with a move away from Birmingham during the ongoing transfer window, impressed in a wide role, completing a game-high three dribbles, managing key passes and having one shot on target.
