KNUST in shaky start at GUSA Games

Kumasi, Jan. 6, GNA – Defending Champions Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) succumbed to a 5-6 defeat in their opening match against University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in the men’s soccer category at the on-going Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games in Kumasi.

The two teams settled for 1-1 draw in regulation time, but in the penalty shoot-out UEW managed to convert all their five kicks as against four by KNUST to ensure victory.

Striker Prince Asenso opened the scoring for UEW in a dramatic fashion in the 35th minute when he unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot in a goalmouth melee to send their supporters into a wild jubilation.

In the second half, KNUST came back strongly to equalize in the 80th minute courtesy Amankwaah Yeboah who took advantage of a defensive blunder to find the net for the much needed goal by his team.

In the other fixtures, University of Ghana (UG) trounced University for Development Studies 5-0, while University of Cape Coast also spanked Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) 3-0.

In the women’s soccer category, University of Cape Coast (UCC) also beat the KNUST ladies 4-3 in their opening match.

The participating teams would be expected to play on an all-play-all basis. The team that comes out with the most points is then declared the winner in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Games.

KNUST is the host of the Games which is the 22nd edition of the competition since its inception in 1966.

The ten-day event would see the participants compete for honours in soccer, athletics, badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball, tennis and hockey,
