KNUST to host African Universities soccer/hockey champs

Kumasi, June 11, GNA - The second West African University Soccer and hockey championship is to be held between June 16-26 this year in Kumasi when a cream of sportsmen and women of the Universities in the sub-region converge at the Paa Joe stadium to compete for honours. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which will represent Ghana alongside the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, University of Cape Coast (UCC) and University of Education, Winneba (UEC), will host the 10-day tournament.
Ten universities from Nigeria, Togo, Burkina Faso, the Gambia and Cote d'Ivoire and others are among those to take part in the tournament. Mr Yaw Adu, Head Coach of the KNUST hockey team told the GNA Sport in Kumasi in Kumasi that the tournament forms part of moves to strengthen relationship and foster unity among universities in the sub-region.
The competition, which is to be graced by members of the heads of the academic board of the various universities, Ministers of State and some sports personalities has at stake cash prizes and trophies. The competition is also designed to unearth talents in soccer and hockey from the academia with the view to supporting the various national teams of the competing universities. Mr Adu said KNUST as the host University has for the past three weeks been in camp and has recently engaged a select side of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly in series of friendly matches in the two sporting disciplines to tuned them up for the task ahead. He called on the participating teams to strive to abide by the rules and regulations of the tournament to ensure its success.
