KNUST to offer course in sports

StudentS from the Kumasi Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who are interested in sports can now offer it as one of their elective subjects.

This is to ensure that such students have sufficient time to develop their talents more skillfully in a bid to raise the falling standard of sports in the country.

The Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Kwesi Andam who announced this during the 36th congregation of the university recently, noted that with the new programme, "students would no longer see such a patriotic duty to train or run for Ghana as a waste of time".

He expressed concern about the fastrate that sports is falling in the country and said, "the new academic programme is to revamp sports in the country".

He announced that the programme that will begin as soon as the students return from holidays would involve tennis, badminton and swimming.

"We intend to extend these sports electives to athletics and other individual sporting events," he assured.

He pointed out that for the first time in the history of the university, students offering different courses will have the opportunity to develop their talents in sports as their contribution to place Ghana at an enviable position on the international level.

Professor Andam noted that, "the programme will be invaluable not only to the Ministry of Sports, but to many football clubs and other sporting clubs in the country." He stressed that," it would also make the students healthy to reduce medical bills.

He further announced that, the university has also revamped their centre for cultural studies to harness the cultural heritage in the country.
