Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has thanked the Schalke fans for their support during his time at the club.
The 28-year-old finally became a free agent on Tuesday after the official termination of his contract with the German club.
Boateng started his career with Schalke in blistering fashion but his performance dropped in subsequent seasons.
The former AC Milan was frozen out of the side at the tail end of last season after falling out with the club’s management.
He has since been tagged the bad boy of Schalke but the Ghana midfielder has nevertheless thanked the club’s fans for their support despite the contrasting experience in Gelsenkirchen.
“Dear Schlake fans, I would like to thank you for all your support during my time at the club,” Boateng said in a statement.
“We had some great times and some low moments but I will always remember you guys as loyal and crazy.
“No matter what was said about me I was always proud to play for and represent Schalke 04.
“My experiences at the club has helped me in many ways. Thank you once again and all the best.”
Boateng is set to sign a contract with AC Milan to seal his return to the club he left in 2013.
