The Kanashie Sports Complex is to be redesigned into a modern sports complex at an estimated cost of five million dollars to make it capable of hosting international sporting events. The new model design was unveiled in Accra on Tuesday, by Akufo and Associates, consultants for the project and made public during the maiden monthly meet the press series organised by the National Sports Council (NSC).
The new design would have a football field with a sitting capacity of 15 000 people, tartan tracks for athletics, tennis court and a multipurpose indoor court for indoor events like basketball, Table Tennis and volleyball. The new design would also involve the building of residential facilities and conference centre.
On how the ministry intends financing the project Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, Acting Chief Executive of the NSC said they are in talks with two companies who are prepared to undertake the project on Build Operate and Transfer basis.
He said NSC is also undertaking other projects like the facelift of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium and the Kaladan Park. At the same function the logo for the Sports Fair was displayed while the planning committee members were introduced. Launching the Logo, Mr Edward Osei-Kwaku, Minister of Youth and Sports said his ministry plans to create the necessary enabling environment to ensure that there is a ready market for local sports manufactures.
He said it is his ministry desire to help revive ailing and collapsed local sports kits manufacturing companies to start production again. Some members of the planning committee are Mr Rex Dunquah, Nana Boakye, Fred Moro, Mr Okyere Yanor, Mr Paa Kwasi Evans, Hamza Ramatu, Christiana Dodoo and a representative of Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS).
