Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has said he would do everything within his power to ensure that the neglected Kaneshie Sports Complex becomes a sporting edifice which will be beneficial to the various sporting disciplines in the country.
He expressed his frustration about the neglect of the facility whose operations have virtually ground to a halt in the last few years.
Speaking to Class91.3FM’s Moro Awudu on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly Meeting in New York, Mr Asiamah reiterated government’s desire to restore the facility to its glory days.
“You name a facility after such an illustrious son of Ghana [Azumah Nelson] and completely abandon it like that, and allow it to rot? Very disgraceful in my opinion. Now we are fixing that place, when you go there, you would notice that work is ongoing. Next year by this time it would have been completed,” he stated.
“It is a place we even want to secure for our national teams for training and all those things. We cannot continue to spend huge sums of money to accommodate the various national teams when they prepare for major assignments. I find that unacceptable and under my leadership, I’ll continue to make sure that this is going to be a thing of the past,” Mr Asiamah added.
The sporting complex was constructed under the Kutu Acheampong regime in 1978 and was one of the venues used for the Africa Cup of Nations that same year.
