Farouk Khan, a former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach and now TV pundit has admitted he was as surprised as everyone else to learn that Ghanaian John Paintsil would replace Doctor Khumalo as Komphela’s assistant.

The 35-year-old Ex-Black Stars player will now work alongside Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela, who was in charge of Paintsil at Maritzburg United two seasons ago.

Paintsil replaces former South African international Doctor Khumalo as Chiefs’ assistant but the news comes as a surprise to Khan who was assistant to the late Ted Dumitru when Amakhosi clinched the league title twice in 2004 and 2005.

“From a coaching acumen I can’t really say much because I only know John as a player and obviously Steve knows him well enough because he worked with him at Maritzburg United. I think it is admirable that the club chairman (Kaizer Motaung) has allowed the coach to pick his people and there will be enough time during pre-season to decide if they need one or two signings,” Khan said.

Paintsil who announced his retirement from football last week, will now join efforts to restore Chiefs to championship status again after finishing fifth in the 2015-2016 Premier Soccer League season.
