International Master Francis Anquandah, six times national champion led Tema Knightmare Chess Team to victory at the just ended Christian Community Micro-finance Limited (CCML) Chess Championships held at the Theodosia Oko Hockey Stadium.
The Tema lads had to brush of neck to neck competition from defending champions Alisa through a tie-break as both clubs ended with 17 points whilst Takoradi came third ahead of notable teams including Dansoman, Legon, Sakumono, Kaneshie and KNUST A.
Maud Benson, a 13 year student at Angel’s International School received the Discovery of the Tournament award.
She won four out of 4 games on board 4 ahead of national team female players in the competition.
The Individual board prizes from board one to four went to Francis Anquandah, Phililp Ameku, Poku Kwabena Adu and Maud Benson respectively.
The president the Ghana Chess Association, Group Captain George Arko-Dadzie encouraged the new clubs to be registered with the association and commended CCML for sponsoring the event and also called on corporate entities to sponsor the chess league.
Mary Armah, the Corporate Affairs Manager at CCML congratulated the winners and expressed her outfit’s satisfaction with the growing level of interest in the game as the best way to keep the mind healthy hence their company’s willingness to support the growth of the sport in Ghana.
