President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Kwabena Yeboah has said the standard of the Ghana Premier League game between Ghana’s two biggest sides, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak played on May Day was low.
Hearts were defeated 1-0 at home by Kotoko.
Kotoko took the lead in the first half against the run of play after a howler from goalkeeper Soulama Abdoulaye, who previously spent seven seasons with the visitors.
The Burkinabe shot-stopper surprisingly failed in his attempt to kick a feeble back pass from centre-back Richard Akrofi, which dropped into his own net by the 44th minute.
Despite the huge patronage, Mr Yeboah said the game lacked quality.
“In terms of patronage, absolutely incredible. In terms of participation from the crowd incredible, but I think it is an apology of a Kotoko-Hearts game in terms of standard,” he told the media.
“I don’t think there was a particular player who was outstanding, quite an average performance, and Hearts will forever curse their goalkeeper. I thought he had a bad game; it is a game he will easily want to forget, but whoever thought that the Kotoko-Hearts game has lost its magic will have to rethink. It’s been a wonderful game in terms of build-up, in terms of patronage, but the game itself I think the quality was very low.”
Ghana's boxing icon Professor Azumah Nelson, who was present at a game, said it was a lucky win for Kotoko.
“The better team won. It was a lucky win, but I don’t support any team; I support both of them,” he said.
Hearts are still second on the league log despite their defeat with 18 points while Kotoko sit ninth on the table with 14 points.
