Asante Kotoko Players Celebrate

Asante Kotoko took their revenge on Division One side, Wassaman, after hugely overturning their 1-0 first leg deficit with five unanswered goals in the Elite Cup round of 32 second leg at the Baba Yara Stadium on Wednesday.

Kotoko defender Christopher Bonney levelled on aggregate within 20 minutes after his fine effort cancelled out Ampem Dacosta's first leg winner.

Latif Amadu took advantage of the unsettled Wassaman team to further put his side ahead while Ahmed Toure drove home a fine finish to make it 3-0. Amadu later claimed a double before Prince Baffoe wrapped it up with a solo run in the 87th minute.

The result comes as a morale booster for coach David Duncan and his men after a frustrating Caf Champions League exit at the hands of Algerian side MC Eulma three weeks ago.

Duncan recalled Toure, who was sidelined for the first leg, and kept faith in club's legend Stephen Oduro, who performed brilliantly against Olympics in their previous league game.

Bonney pounced on a defensive blunder in Wassaman area and successfully chipped his effort past onrushing goalkeeper to open the floodgates for Porcupines Warriors to score another before the recess through Amadu.

Officials of Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti were at the stadium to inspect facilities and watch Kumasi-based team ahead of a planned international friendly on September 4 at the same venue.

Kotoko are now languishing ninth on the league log with 18 points, 10 behind leaders Ashantigold SC. They will now join the 15 teams who have already qualified to the next round of the Elite Cup for balloting.

The 16 clubs will be placed into four groups, with the winners of each group advancing to the next stage of the competition.
