Beginning next season, players of Kumasi Asante Kotoko will be up for the club’s player of the year award which is set to be officially launched on 29th September at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi.
All Kotoko board members are expected to be present at the launch during which a mini fundraising for the club will also take place.
The brainchild of Dr. Ernest Opoku, MD at the Redhill Medical Centre at Santasi-Anyinam in Kumasi, thus dubbed ‘Redhill player of the month award,’ Kotoko fans will decide 60% with the technical team of the club deciding the remaining 40% on who wins at the end of each month. Accordingly, talks are ongoing with Mobile Content to soon announce a short code so that supporters nationwide can vote. According to staunch Kotoko supporter Dr. Opoku, he’s instituting the award with the aim to motivate the players to go the extra mile and conquer the African Champions’ League. “I’ve supported Kotoko all my life. The award is a way of motivating the players across board. We just hope to motivate the players so they put their best and finally win that elusive CAF Champions’ League,” Dr. Opoku exclusively told 90 MINUTES via phone yesterday.
“With the recruitment management have done and the motivation they are already giving the players, I have no doubt that we will defend the league title,” He continued. “They have increased the salaries of almost all the players, they have increased allowances and the recruitment of certain key players also means there will be a stronger bench than last season so the league is a done deal.
“If we win the FA Cup, it’s a bonus but what we are interested in is the Champions’ League. Kotoko have to win it next year.”
