Kotoko win 23rd Ghana Premier League title

Asante Kotoko are winners of the 2013-14 season of the Ghana Premier League title after beating New Edubiase 2-1 on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors have retained the title they won last year to make it a record 23 with two games to spare in the term. The Kumasi-based club have been keeping the trophy since the 2010-2011 season when the current deputy coach of the Black Stars Maxwell Konadu won it.


It is coach Didi Dramani's second league title in charge of Kotoko. They amassed 54 points from 28 games to annex the maiden First Capital Plus trophy, They have so far won 17 fixtures, drew three and lost eight.


It was Seidu Bancey who got the party off to a flying start with a wonderful 41st minute strike at the Gyamfi Park before Prince Baffoe doubled the lead on the stroke of half time.


Emmanuel Nti Mensah pulled one back when Stephen Manu had missed from the spot to end any late scare. Coach Dramani has equalled Cecil Attuquafio's record of back-to-back league trophy whiles Kotoko equal the record of three-straight titles by Hearts of Oak and Ashanti Gold.


Elsewhere, Heart of Lions brushed aside relegation-bound Amidaus Professional 3-1 at the Tema Sports Stadium. Goals from Razir Mohammed, Idan Conney and Prince Acquah gave Lions a shocking victory after Titus Glover pulled one back for the homesters. The win puts Lions in a pole position to qualify for next season's Caf Champions League.


Hearts of Oak pipped Inter Allies by a loan goal from Winfred Cobbinah at the Accra Sports Stadium to break their 10-game unbeaten run in all competition and piles pressure on Lions in the bid for the second position.

King Faisal were stunned and left in serious trouble after Liberty posted a 2-0 home defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium in their first home loss this season. Kennedy Ashia poked the Scientific Soccer Lads' noses in front before he added another to mount pressure on the Kumasi-based team. Medeama beat Berekum Chelsea by 2-0 with goals from Malik Akowuah and Nathaniel Asamoah.


Dwarfs breathed life into their battle to survive relegation against Bechem United in Cape Coast after a solo goal from Ernest Ackron.


In Wa, All Stars and AshGold shared the spoil in a game which ended barren.


Aduana Stars continued their impressive performance by beating Hasaacas 2-0 in Dormaa. Goals from James Abban and Fusienu Mohammed helped them move nineth on the log.


Kotoko have now secured their slot in Africa next season with the win.
