Sammy Kuffour turned down an opportunity to become captain of the Black Stars to save his good relationship with C.K Akunnor.

The 35-year-old was made the offer days before Ghana’s campaign at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali and insists he couldn’t have made a better decision in turning down the captaincy with the benefit of hindsight.

“I was called before we went to Mali for the Africa Cup to offer me the Black Stars captaincy,” he told Joy FM.

“But I felt it wasn’t right because C.K the captain at the time was a very good friend of mine and I didn’t want the situation where in future my relationship with him will be spoiled by the decision.

“The way and manner the offer was made at that time was not right, I mean everyone including myself knew I was a leader both on and off the field and therefore I did not need to be a captain to fulfill that.

“And looking at things now, I think my decision to turn the offer down was very good because my relationship with C.K has remained intact.”

The ex Bayern Munich defender will be hosting both local and international icons in a testimonial game in December to officially bring the curtains down on his career which spanned over a decade.
