Veteran football administrator, George Afriyie has alleged that Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku replaced Kwasi Appiah with C.K. Akonnor, whom he could control and manipulate.

George Afriyie implied that Kurt Okraku deliberately set a high target for the Black Stars, using it as a yardstick to dismiss Kwasi Appiah as head coach.

In an interview with Pure FM, the former Liberty Professionals CEO said that after handing the job to C.K. Akonnor, Kurt Okraku allegedly interfered and manipulated the manager.

"Kurt said he would ensure that the Black Stars are ranked among the top 10 teams in the world. Therefore, Kwasi Appiah is not qualified to be the head coach of the Black Stars. This was Kurt Okraku," he said.

"But from his own assessment, the deputy C.K. Akonnor, who was his (Kurt Okraku) own coach was qualified. He didn't let C.K. lead but only appointed him to manipulate him. When some of you were saying it, C.K. didn't want to admit it, but he eventually admitted after he was sacked," he added.

Kwasi Appiah's contract ran out in January 2020, and the GFA refused to renew his deal, replacing him with then-deputy manager Charles Kwabla Akonnor.

Akonnor was in charge of the team for 10 months before he was sacked over a poor run of results.

In an interview with Joy Sports after his sacking, he mentioned that making the final decision on player selections was a major challenge.

"This is public knowledge, this is everywhere. [Having a final say on player selection] was always a challenge," he said.

He won four games, drew two, and lost four during his spell as head coach.
