Kwame Kyei flexes financial muscle by paying $240k fine to Esperance

Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko have finally cleared their debt of $240,000 to Esperance Sportive du Tunis according to Kumasi-based Light FM.

Kotoko were sanctioned by FIFA after being found guilty of the wrongful registration of Ghanaian striker Emmanuel Clottey when he was officially a player of Esperance.

Kotoko were initially fined $180,000 in 2015 but since they failed to honour payment before the deadline, there was an accrued interest of $45,000 plus an additional fine of $15,000 for flouting the initial payment arrangement.

The latest ruling had a deadline of May 10 and according to Light FM (a radio station owned by Kotoko’s Executive Chairman, Kwame Kyei) the full sum has been deposited into the account of Esperance with the Tunisian club confirming receipt.

This means Kotoko have avoided further sanctions from the world football governing body FIFA.

Esperance had initially suggested a payment plan that would have included using the transfer fee of Kwame Bonsu to offset part of the debt while a payment plan was drafted between the two clubs.
